Hello. I'm Denise Coursey, owner and head instructor (4th Dan) of Okinawan Karate for Women. I've been practicing martial arts for more than two decades. For so many of those years, I have been one of only a few women in my dojo. In fact, sometimes I was the ONLY woman in the dojo.
A few years ago, I decided it was time to do something about that. Not because I was tired of being the only woman, but because karate has been such an incredibly positive influence on my life, that I wanted other women to have that experience. And I wanted to create a place, a dojo, that was safe, welcoming, and inclusive.
Okinawan Karate for Women is that place. If you've ever wanted to try martial arts but thought it was only for men, if you were afraid of being the only woman and feeling that you didn't belong, this is the dojo for you. You belong here.
Most martial arts schools claim their style will work for anyone -- no matter your size or gender. But most do not teach that way.
I spent more than 20 years finding what actually works for me -- a 5' 1", 110 pound woman. Come, learn from my years of exploration and experience.
We are a boutique dojo. Our classes are small and are meant to be that way -- and stay that way. Smaller classes mean more individualized instruction, to help you learn faster and address your needs.
We focus on self defense. We do not spar or fight for points or sport. Instead, we teach practical, self-defense applications of traditional Okinawan karate kata.
We teach natural body movement and focus on technique over strength, so our techniques can be used by anyone, regardless of size, strength, age, or gender.
You are never too old to learn karate. Never. Our members range in age from teens to 60s.
We welcome women and girls over 12. Karate is always better, more practical, and easier to learn with a trusted training partner. We encourage you to join with a family member.
We are a member of the Beikoku Shorin-ryu Shidokan Association and train under the watchful eye of Hanshi Roberto Curtis (9th degree) of Virginia Okinawan Karate. In fact, we share his dojo space.
We encourage attendance at his classes and practicing with his dojo members whenever you are ready!
